Richard Smith is a Godsend to me and to my family and I mean that statement quite literally. In April 2019, my son reached the darkest moment of his life after suffering a painful and extended gastrointestinal illness that left him severely emaciated and eventually, mentally ill. Overnight, we went from a family that had never been exposed to the punitive system for the mentally ill to the nightmare of the criminal judicial system of which we had no comprehension or ability to navigate to protect our son. We were devastated, heartbroken, and desperately needed help. Through a very fortunate reference from a trusted family advocate, I received a reference to an accomplished criminal defense attorney, Richard Smith. On introductions to our case and learning that we were completely lacking in any prior criminal judicial exposure, Richard treated me and my family with compassion and respect as he navigated the case to represent and defend our son. Richard went to work quickly to pull in experts with the appropriate skill to assist us which included a family investigative counselor who interviewed and provided an assessment of our intermediate family and a highly esteemed physician who could evaluate and provide an accurate medical diagnosis for our son. Within 65 desperate days after our son’s arrest, Richard succeeded in getting him transferred to a medical hospital where he received immediate treatment. Within 2-3 days of receiving medication and aggressive nutritional treatment, our son recovered from a catatonic state and began speaking coherently and cooperating with his caregivers. By mid-August of 2019, we were allowed to visit our son in the hospital for the very first time since his arrest. We were told by many that a release in 65 days was a near-miraculous time frame. I get chills every time I think of this most wonderful and remarkable reunion between parents and son. After spending more than 6 months in the hospital and deemed competent to proceed, our son returned to jail for 10 months while awaiting trial and the potential outcome for a conditional release program that was identified through Richard’s legal research and collaboration with the State Prosecutor’s office. Fast forward to March of 2022, our son is successfully navigating the conditional release program having progressively moved through 3 residential facilities and awaiting imminent transfer to the 4th and final residential facility. Over time, he has gradually earned day passes and brief monthly visits home. As a family, we are stronger and closer than ever before, and cherishing every moment we have together. During his time in recovery, he has learned so many valuable life lessons that can only be learned through enduring great adversity. He has also taken on many initiatives to regain the trust and confidence of his family and friends including applying for a Federal Pell Grant and enrolling at Troy State University where he is completing his bachelor’s degree through online coursework. As a family, we are so very grateful for our son’s second chance at life that he so deserves. We cannot be more proud of him for his demonstrated long-term resilience and earned wisdom. He is a kind, caring, and very intelligent young man who has a very bright future ahead of him thanks to Richard Smith’s strong criminal defense skills. Thank you Richard Smith. Thank you NAMI.
